Horizon Software Systems, Inc. Founder Don Beck Retires
On December 13, 2006, the employees of Horizon Software Systems and Global Education Technologies gathered in Denver to celebrate the great career of Horizon's founder, Don Beck.
In spring of 1987, Carol Beck, a special education teacher in Anderson, South Carolina, prompted an end to hand-written IEPs. Frustrated with the tedious and painful process of 3-part paper forms, Carol suggested to her husband, Don, that perhaps IEPs could be completed on the computer. As the district's Director of Computer Services, Don put his programming genius to work, and the Special Education Planner was soon born. In 1992, he and Bob Read founded Horizon Software Systems, Inc. to provide what became EXCENT® software to school districts nationwide.
Don has now retired from Horizon Software Systems to pursue his desire to help more people in a volunteer capacity. He will be missed, but we'll keep in touch and he will always be part of us and his values remain the core of our organization.
